Clearance at Rite Aid!
At my local Rite Aid, I found a little corner of an aisle with 75% off Spring decor! I got a cute candle holder and a jar candle that I will use as a hostess gifts both for less than $4!
I will spruce up the jar candle with a little card made from scrapbooking scraps and some ribbon, and it will be such a cute gift! Good jar candles can get super pricey, so was overjoyed when I found this one, and in my hostess’s color scheme too!
I normally don’t snoop around too much, I get in and get out, but I’m glad I found these deals. I am planning on using the other candle holder for another hostess when we stay with family on our way to CA in a few weeks!
It pays to check out those corners at Rite Aid!
Frugal Failures…
As a frugal person, I occasionally look back and start kicking myself repeatedly over my past financial blunders. I’m 24 years old, so I can’t have that many, right? Ahh… actually, I have had a few in my day. It bugs me to no end that in most cases, I could have done it differently. As a confessed perfectionist, I have a terrible tendency to focus on the “oops” moments of my financial past. So for some therupetic financial healing, I am dedicating this post to the imperfect moments in life. To the days that we forget coupons, impulse buy, and don’t prepare! For the mishaps, mistakes, and stupid decisions that we all make because we are all human and therfore not perfect… this post is therefore dedicated.
My Top Ten Frugal Failures:
10. Missed coupons
I hate it when I forget coupons! I had a B1G1 for head and shoulders when it was 2/$8 with a $4 rebate. I could have gotten the stuff for free after rebate! There have been several moments such as this and it just kills me. Coupons to me are like free money. I hate it when I lose that free money!
9. Buying stuff I don’t use
This is especially true of produce and dairy. I throw away way too much produce. With just the two of us, we have a hard time using it all. One time when we were first married, I went to the store without first looking at the cupboards and fridge, came home to two full gallons of milk, and ended up with four gallons of milk in the fridge after I bought 2 more and it all expired in 2 weeks… for two people. I also did not know that you could successfully freeze milk at that time and just dumped it down the drain. Ugh.
8. Extravangant spending:
Well… when I was in high school, I worked at a little pretzel store part time. I made about $40 a paycheck. I would deposit my little check, and go get my nails done! $30 a pop! I would then go and spend my remaining $10 on eating out or going to the movies or bowling with friends leaving me at a balance of $0. I know, I was so stupid. After I graduated, I went to Haiti on a mission’s trip and felt so convicted about my worldliness and stopped going. Thank goodness! I’ve estimated that I spent about $600 dollars on my nails over 10 months time. Yuck! Unfortunately, this is just one example of my extravagant spending during that time in my life.
7. Buying stuff just because its on sale!
Oh I know I have a ton of frugal friends who do this too! In college, my entire wardrobe was made of cheapy stuff that barely lasted the school year. I always felt I was doing so well in the clothes department because I spent so litte. I just kept spending a little to replace this, oh! And this is only $10! Ooo! This is just $5! Add up all those little expenditures for all that stuff, and it all added up, big time. I don’t have a single one of those “bargains” still hanging around my wardrobe… they all fell apart. Cheap doesn’t mean frugal Rach! Oh how I wish I could go back!
6. Shopping as therapy
I’m a woman. This is normal, right? Just because I am a woman doensn’t make this okay. I need to seek after Christ for comfort when I am freaking out or sad or overwhelmed. Word of advice– stay away from friends who use shopping as therapy. It’s just not healthy.
5. Store Credit Cards!
Target! Gap! You have led me astray! Well, I never went over a balance of $260, but still, I shouldn’t have gone there in the first place. So awful! By the way, I used to work at Target. I recieved a lot of training on how to get customers to sign up for credit cards. Part of my evaluation as an employee revolved around how many credit cards I got people to sign up for. I hated it! I can’t believe I participated in such atrocities! As I got towards the end of my time there, I told my supervisers that I just didn’t believe in debt. It went against my values. They allowed me to work on the sales floor instead. I scored so high as an employee in all other areas that they still thought I was worth while on the target team.
4. Not having Carbon Copy Checks
My husband and I rent. We always, and I mean always pay our rent on time. I sent our January rent on time, and on the 7th of January, we got a 72 hour eviction notice on our door! What?!! Apparently, the office never got our rent. But I sent it! I went back and forth with the lady at the office for a couple days, and she was going to fine us $100! I could not believe it. I was able to convince her to allow me to rewrite the check and cancel the old one with out the fee. THE NEXT DAY she received our rent with a note from the post office saying that it was delivered to the wrong address. Yup. So after a lot of stress and anxiety and a $30 check cancellation fee, I realized I needed a copy machine, automatic bill pay, or carbon copy checks to prove that I sent the money. I have since purchased carbon copy checks and started automatic billing as well. It’s just the smarter thing to do.
3. Over spending the bank account
In college, before marriage, I did not keep track of my spending… and I over spent. I had to call my mom and ask her to bail me out! Yeah, talk about embarrassing. She did, and then graciously explained to me how to keep track of my spending. Thanks mom!
2. Buying a warranty on a used car
This was dumb. We spent an extra $1700 on a warranty on our car when we bought it, and all the stuff that happened to the car was not covered by the warranty! We had just gotten rid of two beaters that kept breaking down and we were spending truck loads of money on tow fees and work on the cars. We thought we were helping ourselves. We bought a 2001 mazda, it didn’t need a warranty. Why? Because its a newer, quality car.
1. Not tithing (and not telling my husband)
Our first summer as husband and wife, I stopped tithing. At that time, I was solely responsible for the finances. We didn’t communicate well about finances at the time, and I didn’t want my husband to know how “bad” it was. BIG mistake! The Bible is very clear that tithing should be our first expense… we are to give the first fruits of our labor. It was obvious we were not living in God’s will. Fincancially, things were very, very tight. As soon as I fessed up to hubbie, and caught up on all our tithing and giving, we were blessed. We learned from our mistakes and communicate about our finances, work together on it, and most importantly, tithe regularly.
Decluttering Works For Me!
I have mentioned before that my husband is serving our home church in eastern WA this summer as an intern. As we are both teachers, we headed back to Eastern WA once school got out and moved into my parent’s basement for the summer while keeping our apartment intact in Vancouver.
As I am here and have no job for the time being, I have begun decluttering! My job today was to attack my youngest sister’s room. (Scarey!) She has inherited my grandmother’s knack for not ever wanting to throw anything away! After 8 hours of hard work, we have about 11 bags of stuff for a yardsale, 3 bags of trash, 1 clean and very organized bedroom, $1.58 in spare change, $25 in gift cards to a local bookstore, and a small gift card to McDonalds for a free small fry!
My sister cracks me up because she had no idea that she had those gift cards! We decided that we would go to the book store together and pick something out; my reward for all my hard work.
She was going to just toss out the gift card to McDonalds, and I had an idea! I do so love to blog, and I know my blog does not have the bells and whistles that other blogs do, but I thought, hey! What’s to keep me from giving this away on my blog! We all need a little treat now and then, might as well make it free! And I would just hate to throw a free small fry in the trash!
So, for a little gift card to McDonald’s for a free small fry, just leave me a comment about something you have found while decluttering! I’ll draw a name on Sunday and send it to you!
A peaceful space means a peaceful mind!
For me, decluttering helps me to feel peaceful in my space because I know everything has a place. Frugally speaking, decluttering helps you find things that you can sell, it helps you take inventory of what you have so that you don’t buy doubles, and last but not least, it reminds us that we really truly don’t need to accumulate more stuff!!
Let me know what lessons you have learned/treasures you have found decluttering!

I miss my deal shopping!
I realize free is good. I truly enjoy getting stuff for free. We are staying with my parents for the summer and I am getting all kinds of stuff for free, including books that my mom and I bought online for my classroom. However, I really miss my weekly deal shopping trips. Especially to Target because I would walk out of there with such great stuff for pennies. I am a little sad today. (sigh.)
My parents aren’t really coupon people. So, my services are rendered useless here. I guess not having to spend anything on groceries is better than spending a little and getting a lot.
For those of you who read this that still get to deal shop, Attention Target Shoppers has a lot of great Target deals listed with the coupons you need. Check it out!
Going to the chapel…
It is June and the wedding season is upon us. We went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago, and I was very proud of my frugal wedding gift! Sometimes, I feel guilty if I put together a gift I didn’t spend a lot of money on. I think in today’s world, a lot of money spent equals a lot of love. I decided with this wedding, I would show my love in a different way. I made something!
I found a great picture frame on sale at Craft Warehouse. I took the engagement picture that the couple sent out in the invites and used some of my pretty scrapbook supplies I already had and put together a great little shadow box. I used some chip board letters to spell out the couples last name.
I think it turned out great! To wrap it, I used wrapping and ribbon that I already had and made a cute card! Altogether, this gift was quite frugal and I feel like it shows a lot more about how I feel about this couple than a toaster would.
The Joy of Hand Me Downs!
I just love getting free clothes. I love it even more when they are cute! Last night, a friend of mine
asked me to look through some of her old clothes and I hit the jack pot! I am so excited because there was a lot of great “teacher” sweaters and fall clothes. I’m thinking I may not need to do back to school shopping for clothes! I’ll still need shoes, (arg! I hate shoe shopping!) Here’s what I got for FREE!
2 thick winter sweaters
2 cute Old Navy thermal shirts
1 super cute skirt
1 cute pair of comfy cropped pj pants
1 polo shirt
3 pairs of exercise shorts
1 white button up cardigan (which I needed)
1 red long sleeve tee
1 striped 3/4 length shirt (that is so flattering on me!)
1 v-necked white sleeve less shirt
Total: 14 FREE items that will truly enhance my wardrobe!
I think it’s great to give hand me downs, my sisters, my mom and I always try to do the same with eachother. It’s just nice to get something new to you every now and then.
Thanks Heather!
The CA trip break down
It’s coming! Our trip to sunny California is only 17 days away! Woohoo!
I wanted to share the break down on how we are able to afford a trip to California during such challenging economic times. Looking at these numbers gets me so excited!
The break down:
Gas:
We are carpooling with friends and driving down from Vancouver in a gas efficient car. For us, we will have to drive down from eastern WA first, so we are setting our high estimate at $230.
Lodging:
We are staying with my brother, Nate’s aunt, camping, and taking advantage of Monica’s AAA discount at a hotel and have gotten the total lodging cost down to about $240.
Camp site: 2 nights at $60/night divided by 2 couples = $60
Hotel: 2 nights with AAA discount = $180
Staying with family = FREE!
Tickets to theme parks:
We bought the city pass from Costco. We have 3 days at DisneyLand/California Adventures, 1 day at Universal Studios, 1 day at Sea World, and 1 day at the San Diego Zoo. We bought the passes at a Costco in Oregon so we didn’t have to buy sales tax! (Thanks Monica for that great idea!)
Tickets: 2 city passes at $217 = $434
Food:
I have been stocking up on free and cheap easy food like pop tarts and granola bars. We are also planning on splitting meals at the theme parks. I will also try to find coupons online for restaurants.
Our high estimate is $140
Souvenirs:
We are going to try to keep this at a minimum. I like to take advantage of free souvineers when we travel like free maps, business cards, restaurant coasters, hotel freebies and so on. our high estimate for souvenirs is $40.
Total estimate for the entire trip: $1044!
Nice huh? Who says you can’t travel when times are tight? We are so pumped about this! Now that I have a job in the fall, we don’t have to worry about stretching our summer paychecks after September, which made this trip even more doable. It’s just so exciting to me that we could do this trip in such an affordable way. We are going with great friends and are getting to do things I’ve always wanted to do! We are very blessed to get to do this. (Thanks Lord!)
Am I becoming a giver??
I am not naturally good at giving. In fact, I am horrible at it. I don’t like to give away stuff/money that is mine. What’s so weird about my ungiving attitude is that I am a very naturally compassionate and loving person. I often am moved to help others. So, why do I struggle with the follow through?
Trust.
In the back of my mind, I think, “I may really need this later.” So I don’t give it away. I may have learned this behavior from growing up in poverty and going to college with nothing. I think my security started to become dependent on my bank account and my belongings.
Recently, God has been doing a work on me. I’ve been asking God to make me/force me into becoming a cheerful giver. (Reluctantly at first.) John Piper shared an amazing sermon about Christians being extremely giving people, and I was moved to tears.
I have been making a conscious effort to give more, and its hard, but so good. There is no peace or joy in being a hoarder of stuff and money. Like I said before, my anti-giving issue has shown itself to be a trust issue. I wasn’t trusting the Lord to provide for us if I gave away what I had. Truthfully, it got so bad a few years ago that I stopped tithing without my husband knowing about it! Yes, we have come so far since then, by the grace of God.
Last weekend, we went to our friend’s wedding in Spokane. I found myself thinking about how I wanted to do more for some of our friends. I wanted to give more. I stopped myself and said “Am I becoming a giver?” I just have never really thought that way before!
So I am rejoicing in that. God has brought this girl so far in the last year and it’s just so amazing!
God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9:7
Summer Tips…
It’s finally summer! Nathan and I have arrived in Eastern WA for the summer and already have had a blast. I thought I would share some of our favorite summer savings tips!
Cheap Sunburn Treatment:
I am allergic to aloe vera, I know I know, it sounds strange, but I really am! When I get a sunburn, (like the doosey I got at our school field day on Monday,) I take whatever lotion I have on hand that I am not allergic to, put some on a small piece of tinfoil, and stick it in the freezer! After the lotion freezes, it is the perfect treatment for my sensitive, burned skin. It soothes, cools, doesn’t cause further irritation, and is super cheap!
Yummy Lemonade:
This is my dad’s recipe, and we love it. All you need is one cup of sugar, one cup lemon juice, as much ice as you choose, water, and a pitcher. To make it, all you do is poor the sugar and lemon juice in the pitcher, mix it a little, add the ice, and then fill the picther the rest of the way with water! It is amazingly good and very inexpensive to make.
Summer Fun:
We do not have kids. Our definition of summer fun is going to look different from a lot of the other frugal bloggers because we don’t have a whole clan to keep happy.
One of our most favorite things to do in the summer is to go play tennis with another couple. We just go to the local free court and just have a ball. (No pun intended!) We are terrible tennis players! But we laugh a lot. Usually we play girls against guys– we are very competitive!
We were very lucky our first summer as a married couple, we had the Seattle Seahawks practicing in our back yard! Actually, in the fields next to our apartments on campus at Eastern Washington University. Did you know that you can go watch trainging camps for free?? It’s amazing! All your favorite, (or not so favorite) players are right there! We got some really fun pictures and had a lot of fun going to watch the Seattle Seahawks training camp for free! By the way, I’m an Indianapolis Colts fan.
