WFMW– Frugal addition!
We are THAT family is hosting a frugal themed WFMW this week! You’ll definitely want to head over there to check out all the great tips people are posting! Click HERE!
I thought I’d focus on one of the more “neglected” rooms in the home when it comes to frugal living posts– the bathroom! I came up with a list of ten simple things I do to cut costs in the bathroom.
1. Toilet paper savings:
Squish the toilet paper roll so it doesn’t go spin crazy and therefore overuse! Know your brand– I actually know how many squares I need per use with the brand we are currently using!
2. Sign up for free samples of feminine products as much as you can!
I have SO many free samples of feminine products in my stockpile that I did not pay a dime for! I also get my pantyliner for free-$0.25 a 16 pack by using the Kotex coupons at Wal-Mart. They have packs for $1 and there are often $.75-$1 coupons on Kotex!
3. Re-use grocery bags, produce bags, diaper packaging bags, toilet paper bags as small can liners in the bathroom!
Why throw away a free trash can liner?
4. Purchase hand soap in bulk and re-fill your little soap pump instead of buying a new soap pump each month!
We have been going on the same huge bulk soap for over a year now. I paid about $3.50 for a huge bottle. Individual bottles with sales and coupons can still cost $.50-$2 each! AND they don’t last that long. I’m also glad we aren’t filling landfills with soap bottles! if your soap is getting low, dilute it with a little water to stretch it out. You can also do this with shampoo.
5. USE LESS!!!
Use less toothpaste, you don’t need gobs of it sticking to your sink. Use less make-up, your natural beauty is what really matters. Use less perfume, you already have yummy smells from your shampoo, deodorant, and laundry detergent. You don’t need perfume too!
6. Shorten your shower time!
Sometimes I set a time goal and see if I can beat it the next time I shower! ‘m competitive even against myself, so this really helps. Some people I know of will actually stop the shower to shave and/or brush teeth and then turn it back on to save even more water! You could also shower cold to save on the electricity to heat your shower, but that wouldn’t be fun.
7. Store razors in oil to make them last longer!
8. Light a candle or spray some room spray vs. leaving the fan on forever!
Its easy to forget that fan is on once you’ve left the room and in the winter, that fan can really suck the heat from your home! My parents installed a timer on their bathroom fan to cut costs as well.
9. Use shampoo and/or conditioner as shaving cream!
What a great use for all that free sample shampoo/conditioner or hotel freebies! If you tried a brand of hair product that didn’t float your boat, don’t toss it! Use it to shave your legs with! I don’t see a difference at all in my experience.
10. Wash your shower curtain liner with vinegar to freshen it up before you replace it!
Liners are cheap, but again, if you don’t have to throw it out, why do it? Less in the land fills and more in your pocket.
All these little things work for us, the savings do add up!
